Diaper Cake

If you’re looking for a cute, fun and practical baby shower gift a diaper cake is the way to go. Not only does it serve as an excellent decor element but every new mom needs diapers. While this may look intimidating, diapers cakes are actually very simple to make.

Supplies

  • 69 Diapers: I used size 1 but you can choose any size you want or even mix it up and do a different size for each layer. Hint: If you do different sizes, make sure the larger size is on the bottom.
  • 69 rubber bands
  • 7 skewers or wooden dowels
  • 3 large rubber bands or string
  • Items to decorate the cake (ribbon, flowers, pacifiers, toys, stuffed animals, etc.)

Directions

  1. Start at the top (open) end of the diaper and roll. Secure with a rubber band. Repeat this until all the diapers are rolled.
  2. Place 40 diapers in a circle so there are 4 rings.
    • Center: 1 diaper
    • Ring 2: 7 diapers
    • Ring 3: 13 diapers
    • Ring 4: 19 diapers
  3. Place a large rubber band or string around the diapers to secure them in place.
  4. Place 7 skewers or wooden dowels in the second ring of diapers so you have one skewer in each diaper. These will hold your next two layers in place.
  5. Arrange the second layer of diapers in three rings. You will use 21 diapers for this layer. The second ring of diapers should slide over the dowels to hold the layer in place.
    • Center: 1 diaper
    • Ring 2: 7 diapers
    • Ring 3: 13 diapers
  6. Secure this layer with a large rubber band or string.
  7. Arrange the third layer of the cake using 7 diapers. Again, the second ring should slide over the dowels to hold this layer in place.
    • Center: 1 diaper
    • Ring 2: 7 diapers
  8. Secure this layer with a large rubber band or string.
  9. Decorate the cake as you desire. In this case, I’m using the cake as part of a Cute as a Button baby shower theme so I used a 2″ burlap ribbon, 1/2″ teal ribbon, yellow paper buttons and a rubber duck as a topper. img_3797

INSIDER TIP: If you are transporting the cake and nervous about it falling apart, cut the short side of the diaper box into a little platter for the bottom layer.
